By-election campaigning with Gavin in Wester Ross

One of the great challenges of the Highland Council is the sheer size of our footprint and the rurality of many of our communities. That is why it is so important that we have voices in the Highland Chamber fighting local causes and standing up against the devastating effects of centralisation.

Activists and Highland Councillors come out in support of Gavin Berkenheger

That is why I was delighted to spend a day with our Council candidate for the Wester Ross, Strathpeffer and Lochalsh, Gavin Berkenheger. Gavin is campaigning to be the wards second Scottish Conservative Councillor and has been gathering support from local businesses and community groups for his plan to stand up for the ward. As the transport spokesperson for the Highland Conservative Group I can understand the frustration of locals at the state of the roads and the fragility of the road and rail network around Stromeferry. Serious long term solutions to problems in our rural economy must be taken seriously by all levels of government and have politicians standing behind local people in voicing their concerns and frustrations. Knocking on doors and leafleting around KinLochewe, Torridon, Inveralligin, Annat, Sheildaig and Strathcarron was encouraging and as I head back to the Council for further committees this week I wish Gavin the very best of luck next week when West Ross, Strathpeffer and Lochalsh go to the polls.
